Week of October 12-October 16:
My 8th week of my Intern experience started out handing back tests that the Geometry students completed on Logic. We began a new unit with challenging material this week, which concerns Postulates and Proofs. I am trying to be patient and allow the students time to think about the concepts, as this is a new and unfamiliar type of mathematics and thinking.
I am still adapting to teaching the Algebra course. I’m finding it difficult to manage my time when planning and organizing multiple classes. I would like to invest all time in one project to perfect it, but then little time is left for the other subject. Being able to create lessons that are interesting, well organized, and well presented for multiple classes is a big adaptation and challenge. It is also more difficult to instruct the Algebra I students, as they have not been my responsibility for as long as Geometry. They respect me and view me as their teaching, but I do not know the students and their learning styles as well as my Geometry students.
On Friday of this week, after my day at school, I volunteered with the Council for Math Educators at Kaleidoscope to work with children ages Kindergarten through 5th grade with math games. It was a lot of fun to be around a different group of students, but assured me that I am content at a secondary level and will never regret my decision!
In the upcoming week, I am trying to create lessons that involve more student involvement. I will be observed by Dr. Stack and Mrs. Muniz in the upcoming week and look forward to getting more constructive feedback about my teaching.
